The students are introduced to basic grammar and vocabulary, presented in culturally authentic situations. The course is focused on communication, therefore practiced through a variety of reading, writing, listening, and speaking situations. There is a strong emphasis on Italian culture both modern and ancient.
The students build upon the grammar and vocabulary learned in level one. The course is focused extensively on the use of the simple past tense as well and applying object pronouns. This knowledge will enable the students to communicate by exchanging opinions, ideas, and concepts. The Italian language is practiced through a variety of reading, writing, listening, and especially speaking situations. Cultural behavior and customs are incorporated into practically each lesson.
The students improve upon the grammar and vocabulary mastered in level 2 and will continue to acquire the application of additional new verb tenses and new vocabulary. Emphasis at this level is communication in the target language. The students express themselves independently by applying vocabulary and reenacting situations related to everyday life. Cultural behavior and customs are continually incorporated into most lessons by comparing and contrasting social behavior such as interpreting gestures and body language.
The students speak exclusively in the target language; they are able to discuss topics ranging from weekend activities to Italian literature. Cultural practices, behavior and history are discussed frequently; the students are encouraged to practice gestures and body language inside and outside the classroom (if in the company of native speakers). The students build upon the language skills they have mastered during the first three levels and continue to improve their skills by applying higher level grammar and vocabulary.
