Advanced Creative Writing: Grades 10-12 : Elective Summer Course
Advanced Creative Writing
This one semester elective course offers students models of creative expression: selections of poetry, several short stories, and one play. Students begin with close readings of literature to study point view, voice, diction and imagery to better understand how device renders meaning in literary works. Literary terms are studied toward mastery so that students have a precise vocabulary for literary criticism to be applied to the workshop – in critiquing original work. Their review of the work of their peers is then shared in language that is precise and not subjective.
Students are in every sense of the word, a creator, in this course. The most important text of the course is the body of work students create – that they author as poet, short story writer, and as playwright. Some creative works will be based on instructor directed assignments and others will be dictated by students’ own creative process. Mimesis is used to learn from master writers even as students work toward discovery of their own authentic voice.
Students are required to complete a final portfolio of text each month. The first will be a collection of poems, the second – a work of short fiction, the third – a one-act play. The course will be divided into these three areas of concentration.
